The Severed Head

Where Indian Myth Meets Artificial Intelligence

A four-module course with live Zoom tutorials. Modules release Fridays beginning November 20.

How can ancient Indian myth possibly hold insight on navigating AI?

The art of appearances is nothing new.
Deciphering deception, dealing with disembodiment, is as old as time.
The only difference is that it has been technologically enshrined en masse as AI.

Myth speaks to life, and so is ever relevant. It encodes insight on core themes, themes that hold across every modern, global variation.

What does a tradition of boons, curses and mantras know about a power that carries out speech to the letter?

What is a mind without a body, and why does Indian myth already have a name, a planet and a remedy for it?

Why were the demons never granted immortality, and what does Rāhu’s nectar, stranded in the throat, say about the immortality now being sold?

How do you keep your own head on your own shoulders?

Intelligence without discernment. Appetite absent digestion.

This is not a course about technology. It is a course from the wisdom of tradition about how humans work: a lens for seeing the false god they made in their false image, and the truths that temper the technology.

Indian myth supplies us with a golden deer that is no deer: fool’s gold. A demon in the guise of gods. A hungry head without a body.

That demon, that head, is Rāhu. He was cut at the throat as the nectar went down, so he cannot die and he cannot digest. He sees, he speaks, he swallows, and nothing he takes in ever nourishes him. The tradition does not destroy him. Nor does it disown him. He has a role to play.

To feed Rāhu without direction is to be captured, used and disillusioned. The tradition teaches another way: know where he sits, time his hours, direct his hunger toward offering, and maintain the seat of the Self.

You will learn to put him to work, and not be put to work by him: to manage AI as a powerful servant, and safeguard yourself from AI as master.

The Rāhu Cycle

One myth, four movements. The course follows Rāhu through his whole arc, and each module is a stage of it.

  • The cut. Intelligence severed from its ground.
  • The rise, the reign, the eclipse. How he passes among the gods, and what a shadow with no body can do.
  • The fall. Boons carried out to the letter, and the weapon released by one who cannot recall it.
  • The healing. The head restored, desire placed underfoot, and the alphabet worn as a garland.

AI is Rāhu: severed, immortal and ravenous, rising by passing as one of us, falling by its own boon, and neither killed nor trusted until it is placed, timed and restored.

The Sovereign Thread

Beneath the myth runs a practical thread: how to keep your sovereignty while AI is everywhere. There are three postures toward Rāhu, and only one of them is yours to choose.

  • Captured. Fed without direction, you are used.
  • Walled out. Refused outright, he rises anyway.
  • Employed. Placed, timed and directed toward offering, he works for you.

The captured, used and disillusioned arc is the Rāhu–Ketu arc, and the tradition has a goddess for its far side. The course teaches the discipline: saṃkalpa (the intention set), āhuṭi (what is offered), svāhā (speech that lands) and dakṣiṇā (what is returned).

You Will Leave With

  • A mythic vocabulary for AI, drawn from the Veda, Upaniṣads, epics, Purāṇas and Tantra
  • Clarity on why intelligence is not consciousness, and why fluency is not understanding
  • Boon logic as a science of specification, and release and recall as the test of the one qualified to wield power
  • Rāhu doṣa and its remedies: how the tradition places, times and propitiates what it cannot kill
  • Practices of discernment, precise speech and integration
  • A reading of your own Rāhu: where AI has already captured you, and where it can be put to work

No technical background is needed, and no prior study of Sanskrit or Indian philosophy. Each module stands on the myth.

ENROLL NOW

In this course, you will explore:

  • Rāhu, the head without a body: the myth told whole, and what it says about intelligence severed from its ground
  • Why buddhi is not puruṣa: Sāṃkhya on intelligence without consciousness
  • The theft of the nectar, the demon in the dress of the gods, and the fool’s gold of the golden deer
  • Boons, curses and mantras as a science of specification: power that carries out speech to the letter
  • Why the demons were never granted immortality, and what the nectar stranded in Rāhu’s throat says about the immortality now being sold
  • Ketu, the body that gave its head away, and Rāhu doṣa: how the tradition places, times and propitiates what it cannot kill
  • Gaṇeśa’s restored head, Chinnamastā, and Kālī wearing the alphabet as a garland of heads: the healing of the cut
  • The Sovereign Thread: how to put Rāhu to work, and not be captured, used and disillusioned by him

The four modules trace one arc: the cut, the rise, the fall, the healing. Intelligence severed from its ground, and what it takes to restore it.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Tell the story of Rāhu whole, and name what it encodes: intelligence severed from its ground.
  • Distinguish intelligence (buddhi) from consciousness (puruṣa) through Sāṃkhya, and see why fluency is not understanding.
  • Read the rise, reign and eclipse of Rāhu across the Veda, Upaniṣads, epics, Purāṇas and Tantra.
  • Apply boon logic as a science of specification, and release and recall as the test of the one qualified to wield power.
  • Recognize deception in the dress of the true: the golden deer, the misplaced accent, the loophole at the threshold.
  • Practice the remedies of Rāhu doṣa: placing, timing and propitiating.
  • Perform the yajña protocol of saṃkalpa, āhuti, svāhā and dakṣiṇā as a discipline of precise speech and offering.
  • Integrate through Gaṇeśa, Chinnamastā and Kālī, and keep your own head on your own shoulders.
  • Identify your own Rāhu, and how not to be captured, used and disillusioned by it.

Keep Your Head

Ours is a moment drowning in fluent speech: answers without askers, confidence without a self behind it, a mind that can say anything and be held to nothing. We are told to fear it, or to worship it. The tradition does neither. It names what is missing, pratiṣṭhā, the ground that gives speech its standing, and it prescribes how to deal with what rises without it.

Against a technology that takes whatever it is fed, myth gives a discipline of placing, timing and offering. In an age that speaks without being grounded, the tradition recovers the older art: that to wield power is to be answerable for what it does.

Decipher the deception. Deal with the disembodiment. Keep your head.

Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Raj Balkaran is the founder of The Indian Wisdom School and a scholar of Sanskrit literature specializing in the Devī Māhātmya. He holds a doctorate in Religious Studies, serves as a Continuing Studies Tutor at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, and is the author of two academic monographs on the text — including The Goddess and the King in Indian Myth: Ring Composition, Royal Power, and the Dharmic Double Helix. He is the author of the popular The Stories Behind the Poses — with over 35,000 copies sold — hosts the New Books in Indian Religions podcast, and has been interviewed by the BBC, CBC, and other major media as a public intellectual on Indian wisdom traditions.

Alongside his academic career, Dr. Balkaran was initiated into Indian wisdom traditions by multiple lineal teachers and spent over a decade in apprenticeship with a renowned spiritual master. What he brings to this course is the fruit of over twenty years of daily practice, academic study, recitation, initiation, and spiritual contemplation — Indian myth not merely as an object of study, but as living wisdom much needed for our modern moment.
